The Liberty Act

This suggestion comes from CAIR-NY, who gave us some great postcarding ideas for Ramadan. Here’s one that helps our immigrant communities.

The Liberty Act (S.4075) is currently stuck in the NYS Senate. The official blurb is “Relates to providing access to services, law enforcement and counsel in certain immigration related matters.”, and it prevents the state from asking about immigration status or even perceived immigration status in a variety of situations, like being stopped by the cops. It prevents NYS from helping the federal government set up a registry of immigrants. And it also establishes a right to counsel (a defense lawyer!) for New Yorkers who are called into deportation or removal proceedings.

You can find your state senator’s office here. Let’s help!
